Here at Gymtalk we’ve tried a number of hit-or-miss protein foods recently, ranging from the good, the bad, to the frankly ridiculous.
In fact, some recent protein creations (garlic protein grasshoppers?) sound as if they were commissioned by a talking monkey high on psychoactive drugs rather than an actual sentient human.
While we wait in earnest for a supplement company to finally crack what we’ve all been waiting for, the ‘protein condom’, the latest protein-infused treat to come our way is the Luxury Protein Brownie from the ever-reliable chaps at The Protein Works.
Not to be confused with something you’d expel from your colon after a night on the Guinness, the protein brownie is one of the latest additions to the TPW’s growing protein bakery range.
Unlike the traditional brownie, these babies are low in fat and sugar and high in fibre and protein, making them a healthy and nutritious alternative for anyone who finds themselves unable to resist the insidious lure of cakes and chocolate.
They come freshly-baked in a tub containing 22 protein brownies which will set you back £17.99.
Currently, the only flavour available is “Belgian Chocolate”.
As we’ve come to expect from The Protein Works, their Luxury Protein Brownies combine high-quality ingredients with fantastic, hard-to-believe macros.
They’re wonderfully free of fillers and thickeners and comprise all-natural flavours and colours.
What really sets these protein brownies apart though is the high-quality protein blend.
While many other supplement companies resort to cheaper, non-whey proteins for their snacks (gelatin), these protein brownies, like the superb Mug Cake Mix I recently reviewed, contain a high-quality tri-blend of whey isolate, hydrolysed whey, and micellar casein.
Per 40g serving, the nutritional stats are as follows:
Calories | 112kcal |
Protein | 11g |
Carbs (of which sugar) | 8.6g (1.5g) |
Fat (of which saturates) | 2.8g (0.7g) |
For a chocolate brownie, these nutritionals are almost unbelievable!
Let me start by saying that these brownies do not taste as good as regular brownies.
Of course they fucking don’t, they haven’t been slathered in sugar and saturated fat, for one.
However, they do taste ruddy bloody lovely, especially when you consider the fantastic nutritionals, and they will 100% eliminate any cravings for chocolates and cakes.
Texture-wise, they’re slightly thicker and denser than traditional brownies, but, again, that’s par for the course for protein-infused snacks.
At the end of the day, show me someone who doesn’t agree these Luxury Protein Brownies taste delicious, and I’ll show you someone with a palette as unsophisticated as a tramp fucking a urinal cake.
As I mentioned earlier, these brownies come in a tub of 22 which will cost you £17.99.
This works out at roughly 82p per brownie.
While this might seem a tad on the expensive side for a 40g snack with only 11g protein, when you consider the superb ingredients and freshness of the product, this really is a bargain.
If this was a high street protein brand you’d be paying five times as much for something that tastes as if it’s been baked in a octogenarian’s colostomy bag.
These Luxury Protein Brownies combine great taste, high-quality ingredients and incredible nutritionals, making them ideal as a healthy snack or dessert to keep chocolate cravings at bay.
Another five star product from The Protein Works which is miles ahead of the mass produced protein rubbish food you’ll find on the shelves of supermarkets or your local Holland and Barrett.
